Successful First Day

After about six very easy hours in the car we successfully landed at our lodging for the night. Proximity to crater lake was our priority and we found the “Union Creek Resort” that is about 45 minutes from the rim of the lake. After an early dinner at the only restaurant around we decided to take a drive up to see the lake.

The view was spectacular, and it wasn’t crowded this late in the day.  There is also still quite a bit of snow on the ground as you can see behind us.
We didn’t anticipate the t-Rex sized mosquito herd though so the fun didn’t last long. We took shelter in the car and decided to head back- we weren’t dressed to face the swarms and mosquitos love both Tracy and I. I got a huge and painful bite through my pants! I am so happy we decided against camping or we would be packing up a tent right now and driving off to find a hotel.
The title “resort” has been added to our lodging with quite a bit of generosity. We have a tiny but cute room that is really hot and the bathrooms are down the hall. But the beds seem comfy, the room is clean and we are going to call it a night pretty early. The plan is to be up at 4:00 so we can make it back up to the rim of the crater for the sunrise- with proper mosquito defenses!
