We took it easy today as we walked or stood in our class most of the day yesterday. We had checked everything off our list for San Miguel De Allende and felt like we had seen every street of the old city. We went to breakfast at the number one place on Yelp, which is often a time-consuming project. We had walked by the restaurant yesterday and there was no line so I was hoping we would be lucky today. Unfortunately, we waited almost an hour on the sidewalk to get a table in the popular and tiny place but had a nice chat with some girls in line next to us and the time passed quickly. We both had amazing poached eggs for breakfast. Mom’s were accompanied by pesto, tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella. My eggs were in a tomatillo sauce with beans, a crispy tortilla, and a giant pork rind! They were both amazing and worth the wait. The coffee was also excellent.
We walked a little around town after breakfast, returning to a few of our favorite shops. I finally found the perfect little item to make into a Christmas ornament for next year – a travel tradition.
We spent the afternoon finishing up some journaling, drawing, and reading projects and started the task of packing it all back into our bags.
I researched restaurants for quite a while this afternoon, trying to find the best possible enchiladas in town. Several factors helped me narrow down my choices – distance, neighborhood, the fact that the place also had Sushi on their menu – not so authentic! I ended up picking a place only a block from our Casita. It was a new restaurant staffed by some hipster kids from Mexico City. The food was phenomenal – if Santa Cruz had a restaurant like this one I would eat there weekly. The menu was limited but the flavors were amazing. We shared the best guacamole I have ever had in a restaurant, and then mom got a mushroom stuffed avocado with cheese and bacon, and I had their chicken enchiladas. There are no words to describe how delicious everything was. The only downside was their lack of liquor license, but we still had a bottle of wine in our little Casita and it was only a block away so we managed. I hope these kids go far with their business, they are at the forefront of modern and highly local Mexican cuisine- and doing it in a tiny open kitchen.
The rest of the evening was spent packing and reading. We leave early tomorrow and have a full day of shuttles, airports, and driving ahead. It has been a fantastic and relaxing trip that has opened my eyes to a part Mexico that I didn’t know existed. I can’t wait to explore more of the beautiful little cities in this country – mom already started her list.
