Arcos de la Frontera

We had a lazy morning at home followed by a lazy afternoon by the pool and packing with a trip to town sandwiched inbetween. Town is currently called Arcos de la Frontera and is a hill town complete with a castle, many churches and even nuns.

We walked up and down the streets looking at the ancient walls and doors that are now filled with cell phone shops, tapas bars and souvenir stores. The highlight was a visit to a convent bakery. The crazy part was that the nuns of this convent are cloistered and don’t interact with the public. You choose what you want from a sign and ring a bell. Then you order by yelling at an ancient nun through a little slot and tiny window. Shortly thereafter the window rotates, the cookies await and you leave your money where the cookies were before she rotates the window back.

Tomorrow it’s back in the car and off to Portugal! We are all excited to venture into another country that is new to all of us. We will be sad to say goodbye to Spain – but I am sure we will all be back someday.
