Beautiful Bridges

Today was another travel day.  The GPS told us that it would take us about three hours to get from our little cottage to our next destination.  Unfortunately our GPS doesn’t account for traffic and we spent a couple of hours in line with the citizens of Seville who were headed to the beach to escape the heat.

The drive was beautiful crossing amazing suspension bridges and traveling through the countryside. We successfully crossed into Portugal – all we had to do was drive under a sign – and we navigated the complex toll road system.  Thankfully our rental car is actually Portugese so we had the “fast track” type device ready to beep  our way through the frequent toll charge areas.

Once we reached the city of Lagos we found that our GPS had failed us yet again.  We were clearly not at our hotel when we reached the checkered flag.  I set the destination to Lagos central and we decide to explore.  We took a right when we shouldn’t have and spent a few harrowing minutes trying to find our way back out of the labyrinth like old city.  Kelly did an amazing job of managing the crazy situation with the stick shift station wagon that felt like a Mac truck in those tiny alleys.

Once we were free from the old city walls we decided to head to McDonalds to regroup and use their free Wifi to sort out our problem.  I quickly found the real location of our hotel and took some screenshots.  After a few McNuggets and some time checking email we were back on the road and at our beautiful hotel in about ten minutes.
Once we checked in we walked to a beautiful beach nearby and played in the Atlantic.  The water is warmer than home but a little cooler than Hawaii.  We enjoyed a beer at the beach and then an amazing dinner at a traditional restaurant near the old city.  We had a pot of fish stew and a pitcher of Sangria, followed by shots of the local firewater with our waitress. We are all in love with Portugal and so happy a colleague told us to come to Lagos.
