About Foxglove and Flamingo
A trip to Japan when I was just thirteen years old sparked what has become my endless desire to travel the world and experience cultures through food. Since then I have been blessed to have visited thirty-three countries, and about half of the states. Years of learning to cook, and being judged by sweet old ladies in the 4-H program, have given me the courage to explore culinary tastes, techniques, and gadgets from all over the world. My blog is intended to be part travel diary, part culinary lab journal, and part homestead adventure log.**
My background in science and endless curiosity has caused my cabinets to fill with cooking tools, recipes, and books from all over the world. I devour cookbooks like novels and have completely run out of room for all of them. I am lucky to live close to San Francisco and all the amazing grocery stores that can be found in the Bay Area. I am a full-time middle school assistant principal and enjoy sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. I spend every school break possible filling my suitcase with cooking class notes, gadgets, and spices to bring home and share, or experimenting at home. From the pizza oven, we built in our backyard to the honey we are harvesting from our suburban beehive my husband is always willing to take part in my crazy projects and far-off destinations.
I consider myself extremely lucky to have been raised on a commercial pear orchard near Mt. Hood in Oregon. I had the opportunity to learn to grow food, forage for mushrooms, and fish for trout with my grandpa. I appreciate local and fresh ingredients and don’t mind getting my hands dirty. At the same time, a trip to the nearest international grocery store inspires me to try all sorts of new things and helps bridge the gaps between journeys.
In the fall of 2018, we purchased ten acres of property in the hills between Santa Rosa and Healdsburg California. We are excited to move our home to Sonoma County in the next few years. We spend most weekends on the property doing projects, fixing things, planning our future little farm, and dreaming about the home we will build. The property was a total loss in the 2017 Tubbs fire, and we are working hard to clean up the damage and make it our own. With the stay at home orders of the COVID-19 Pandemic starting in March of 2020, our little property has been a refuge.
I hope you enjoy learning new things and doing a little armchair traveling while visiting my site. I also share my photos on Instagram. Thank you for visiting, please come back often.
**Note – as technology has changed I have tried many different platforms for blogging since 2009. I have recently created my blog’s “forever home” here at “Foxglove and Flamingo”. Please forgive any “under construction” situations you may see. I am working through all the old content that didn’t exactly migrate over properly… Photo sizes and fonts are inconsistent but the content is still all there.
